Ultimate Asset Organizer – Materials

Meet the Addon

Welcome to Ultimate Asset Organizer – Materials for Blender 4.5+.

If you’ve ever had a big pile of texture folders and thought, “I really should turn these into proper Blender materials one day,” this addon is for you.

In plain language, this tool:

  • Takes your texture folders
  • Builds clean, ready-to-use materials
  • Turns them into Assets for Blender’s Asset Browser
  • Helps you generate nice previews, without crashing your computer

The goal is simple:
Spend less time wiring materials and more time actually creating.

Why You Need It

This addon is here to help you tame your texture chaos. With it, you can:

  • Turn big texture collections into a proper material library
  • Drag and drop materials from the Asset Browser into any scene
  • Keep your .blend files lighter and cleaner
  • Build a library once and reuse it across all your projects

It’s especially handy if you:

  • Download a lot of PBR texture packs
  • Work on environments, props, or look-dev
  • Share a material library with a team or between different projects

Key Features at a Glance

Here’s what the addon brings to your workflow, in simple terms:

Folder-to-Material Conversion

  • Point the addon at a folder full of texture sets.
  • It looks inside each sub-folder and creates one material per folder.

Smart Texture Detection

  • Automatically looks for common types of maps (like color, roughness, metal, normal, etc.).
  • Uses what it finds to build a solid, general-purpose material.

Asset Browser Integration

  • Marks your new materials as Assets, so they show up in Blender’s Asset Browser.
  • Makes it easy to reuse them in any project with simple drag-and-drop.

Preview Generation

  • Helps you create thumbnails for your materials so you can see what’s what at a glance.
  • Lets you control how heavy or light the preview process is, so your computer doesn’t melt.

Memory-Friendly Workflow

  • Gives you an idea of how demanding a preview job might be.
  • Lets you stop a job safely if it’s taking too long or if you need to free up resources.

Cleanup Tools

  • Helps remove unused stuff from your file when you’re done.
  • Can also clean up temporary preview files you no longer need.

Big Picture: How It Works

Here’s the high-level idea, without any tech talk:

  1. You choose your texture folder
    • You pick a main folder where your material folders live.
    • Each sub-folder is treated as one material.
  2. The addon scans your folders
    • It looks inside each folder for texture images.
    • Based on their names, it figures out which image should be used for which part of the material.
  3. Materials are created for you
    • For each folder, it builds a clean, Blender-friendly material.
    • These materials get added to your current .blend file.
  4. Materials become Assets
    • With one action, your materials are marked as Assets.
    • They’re now ready to appear in the Asset Browser.
  5. Previews are generated
    • You decide where to save your asset .blend file and where to store temporary preview data.
    • The addon then goes through your materials and creates nice thumbnails for the ones that don’t have one yet.

That’s it. You point, it builds, you enjoy.

Quick Start: First Time Setup

1. Install the addon

  • Download the addon file.
  • In Blender, go to: Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install…
  • Select the addon file and enable it.
  • (Optional) Click Save Preferences so it stays enabled next time.

2. Find the addon panel

  • Open the 3D Viewport.
  • Press N to open the side panel (if it’s not already open).
  • Look for the tab for Ultimate Asset Organizer – Materials.

3. Point it to your textures

  • In the addon panel, choose your main texture folder.
  • This folder should contain sub-folders, each one representing a material.
  • If your textures are inside nested folders, turn on the option to search inside sub-folders.

4. Create your materials

  • Click the button to scan and create materials.
  • Wait while the addon goes through your folders and builds a material for each one.
  • You’ll see progress info so you know what’s happening.

5. Turn them into assets

  • Once your materials are created, use the “make assets” action (or the equivalent in the UI).
  • Your materials are now flagged as Assets and ready for the Asset Browser.

6. Generate previews (optional but recommended)

  • Choose where to save your asset .blend file.
  • Choose a folder for temporary preview data.
  • Pick a preview quality (lower = lighter and faster, higher = sharper).
  • Start the preview process and let the addon work.

Now you’ve got a clean material library you can use in any project.

Examples & Ideas

Not sure how this fits into your workflow? Here are a few examples:

Building a personal library from downloaded textures

  • You’ve got gigabytes of free or paid textures sitting in folders.
  • Point the addon at them, build materials, generate previews, and store them in a single asset library file.

Creating a studio or team library

  • Set up one shared materials file for your team.
  • Everyone uses the same materials via the Asset Browser, so looks stay consistent.

Cleaning old projects

  • Import old textures into a fresh file.
  • Use the addon to organize them into a clean library.
  • Reuse them in new scenes instead of starting from scratch.

Environment building

  • Create a library of rocks, ground, metal, wood, concrete, etc.
  • Drag and drop materials as you block out environments or props.

Tips for Best Results

Organize your folders

  • Keep one material per folder.
  • Avoid mixing random textures in the same folder.
  • Try to use clear names like “wood_floor_01”, “metal_rusty_02”, etc.

Start small

  • Test the addon on a small batch of textures first.
  • Make sure the results look good before you run it on a huge library.

Choose preview quality wisely

  • Lower preview settings are faster and easier on your computer.
  • Higher settings look nicer but can be heavier.
  • If previews feel slow, lower the preview quality or process fewer materials at a time.

Keep things tidy

  • Use the cleanup options after big jobs to remove unused data.
  • Clean out old temporary preview files once you’re done with them.
  • Save new versions of your library file as you build it up.

FAQ

Q1: Do I need to know anything about shaders or nodes to use this?

A1: Not really. The addon is designed so you just point it at your folders and let it build the materials for you. You can still tweak things later if you want, but it’s not required.

Q2: My folders are a bit messy. Will it still work?

A2: It depends how messy. The addon works best when each material has its own folder with the maps for that material inside. If unrelated images are mixed together, you may get skipped materials or unexpected results.

Q3: Some materials didn’t get created. What happened?

A3: Usually it’s because the addon couldn’t find a key texture (like a main color map) or the folder didn’t have any usable images. Try checking the folder structure and file names, then run the process again.

Q4: Previews are taking a long time. What can I do?

A4: Try these steps:

  • Reduce the preview quality.
  • Run fewer materials at once.
  • Close other heavy programs while previews are generating.
Q5: Will this break my existing projects?

A5: No. The addon creates and manages materials in the file you’re working on. As with anything important, it’s still a good idea to save a backup before big changes.

Q6: Can I stop a job if it’s taking too long?

A6: Yes. The preview process is designed so you can safely stop it. Completed materials and previews will stay; the addon simply stops working on the rest.
